With the building El Niño pushing very warm water up off our coast, we’re receiving more than our usual share on hot, tropical weather.

We owe this view to tropical storm Polo which crossed the Baja peninsula the other day. When a tropical system churns off the coast of Baja, it pushes thin, high-altitude cirrus clouds hundreds of miles north into Southern California.

As the sun dips beneath the horizon, its light travels through a thicker layer of atmosphere, filtering out blue light and illuminating the underside of these high clouds with vibrant oranges and deep pinks. Combine that high-altitude canvas with crepuscular shadow rays, and you get sky-on-fire evenings like this one over the Pacific here in Northern San Diego County.
The post A Sky on Fire: Evening in Northern San Diego. first appeared on Sage's Acre.

It’s mid-July and it’s ungodly hot and humid because of a storm rolling up out of Baja California. That’s fine though because there’s not much to do in the garden except water and wait anyway.

The one nice thing about the otherwise oppressive weather is that’s it’s making for some spectacular sunsets. This is last night’s just about 15 minutes before the sun dipped below the horizon.

With a goal of getting three harvests of sweet corn this year, I seeded the corn directly into the garden in early April. Despite the turn to cooler weather (the typical “May gray” “June gloom” stuff), the corn is growing splendidly.

This particular round of corn is Kandy Korn, which I wrote about last year. It’s technically a mid-season variety, preferring the heat to the cool of spring, but I had an open packet saved from last year, so it went in the ground first.

Good thing too, because the subsequent planting of Lucious, a bi-color corn, has been a complete disaster.

Despite planting four full rows, poor germination and insects left me with just six scraggly plants. I’ve since done another planting but I’m getting the same spotty germination rate of the last round. Maybe it’s the seed (though they’re new), or maybe it’s the beds I’ve chosen to plant them in. Either way, if I don’t see more spouting in the next week, I’ll swap them out for a different variety.

At least in the meantime we have lots of tasty corn that’ll be ready by the Fourth of July.
The post Sweet Corn is High in Early June first appeared on Sage's Acre.

Normally we would see them ripening in mid-June, but the unusually warm winter woke them up in February and had them blooming by March.

Unfortunately, the bees weren’t out in force yet so a lot of flowers went un-pollinated.

I doubt we’ll harvest more than a pound or two, so we probably won’t be making blackberry jam this year. But at least we have fresh berries for the next few weeks.

Clearing out the spent plants I was pleased to find several tomatillos in there quietly doing their thing. Now that they have some extra sun they’re really starting to fruit and flower.

I haven’t actually planted any tomatillos in years, so these are volunteers from previous seasons. Because I let both purple and green varieties cross-breed, it’s a bit of a crap shoot as to what each year’s offspring will be. But once they start to fruit you can easily tell.

Clearing weeds along the path on the lower hill I stumbled on a wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) in full bloom.

This particular plant is probably three feet tall and six feet wide and is covered in purple flowers the bees and butterflies really enjoy. Like garden radishes, all parts of this plant are spicy and edible. But, unlike the garden varieties, the root is long and thin rather than bulky and compact, so it’s nothing you want to put on a veggie platter.

Wild rashes are considered “invasive” here in Southern California (they’re native to the Mediterranean region), and you see them in late winter and early spring in disturbed soil along embankments and slopes where not much else will grow.

Here at the Acre, I usually find them in nooks and crannies crowding out another, far more invasive and fire prone species, black mustard. While I pull mustard wherever I find it, I let the radishes finish flowering before getting rid of them.

I don’t let wild radishes go to seed in place though. First, because they’re super prolific and will take over if you let them. Second, because like all members of the brassica family, they’re alleopathic, meaning they release chemicals into the soil that prevent other seeds from germinating. While one or two plants are no big deal, if you let them run wild, almost nothing else will grow from seed in that area for a couple of seasons.

Just a wild cucumber (Marah macrocarpa) growing on the fence in the vegetable garden.

Unlike real cucumbers, these are a member of the gourd family and toxic. It’s perennial native to San Diego, growing from a big, woody tuber that can get as big as person (thus the nickname “manroot”).

The spiky fruit will dry out, just like a gourd, then crack open and drop seeds everywhere. One of the interesting things about the seedlings is the first growth goes down rather than up. That turns into the tuber from which the plant then grows upward.

What I really remember about this plant is when we were kids my friends and I would find them and throw them at each other like grenades. If you were lucky and got a good throw, it’d get stuck in their hair and be really hard to remove without pulling some hair out with it.
The post Wild Cucumber (aka: Manroot) on the Fence first appeared on Sage's Acre.

While I will save a bunch of the seed heads from those that I enjoyed, I'll also let a good number (okay, "most") stand where they are. While the towhees, sparrows, and robins will munch on pretty much anything with a seed, the goldfinches are especially drawn to the basil. Pass the herb garden in the morning and a cloud of these little yellow guys will fly off the basil patch and perch on the fence to discuss my presence in their little beep beep beep voices. Once I've gone they'll descend on the basil once again.

Here's a pair from this morning that let me get close enough to snap a photo of them having breakfast.
