Hypothesis: Basil is not a plant, but a gas, and like all gasses it will expand to fill the space it is in.

Test: Plant just six 4-inch pots of basil where you planted 18 pots the year before.

Findings: See photo evidence

Conclusion: Basil is, in fact, a gas.
