The vapor trail left by a SpaceX rocket just after sunset

What a Vandenberg rocket launch looks like from San Diego County on a warm JuneEvening

One of the cool things about living where I do is that whenever there’s a rocket launch from Vandenberg SFB, we can see it. And they’re especially cool when the occur at sunset. Growing up, you never saw these. Now, they’re almost commonplace, but they’re never anything less than spectacular to see.

Here’s last night’s SpaceX Starlink launch about 15 minutes after the rocket went up. Interestingly, the satellites reach orbit just 8 minutes after launch, but the vapor trails after sunset last much longer.
