One of the upsides to my signature Lazy Gardener technique is that at the end of the season I have lots of herbs and flowers going to seed that will end up being bird feeders.

While I will save a bunch of the seed heads from those that I enjoyed, I'll also let a good number (okay, "most") stand where they are. While the towhees, sparrows, and robins will munch on pretty much anything with a seed, the goldfinches are especially drawn to the basil. Pass the herb garden in the morning and a cloud of these little yellow guys will fly off the basil patch and perch on the fence to discuss my presence in their little beep beep beep voices. Once I've gone they'll descend on the basil once again.

Here's a pair from this morning that let me get close enough to snap a photo of them having breakfast.

I’m just a guy with nearly an acre of dirt, a nice little mid-century ranch house and a near-perfect climate. But in my mind I’m a landscaper survivalist craftsman chef naturalist with a barbeque the size of a VW and my own cable TV show. I like to write about the stuff I build, grow and see here at Sage's Acre.
